RED LIGHT FATALITIES INCREASE

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently released a report showing an increase in red light running crashes and fatalities. According to the study, we are at a 10-year high with more than two people killed every day due to drivers running a red.

Most recent numbers show that 939 red light running deaths were reported in 2017. This is a 28% increase in fatalities since 2012. Nearly half of those killed in red light running crashes were passengers or people in other vehicles, 5% were pedestrians or cyclists and just over 35% were the drivers who ran the red light.

PRACTICE CAUTION

We are urging drivers to practice caution and to obey the law and stop on red. “Drivers who decide to run a red light when they could have stopped safely are making a reckless choice that puts other road users in danger,” said Dr. David Yang, AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s Executive Director.

Though 85% of drivers view red light running as dangerous, nearly one in three have admitted to blowing through a light within the past three days. Two in five drivers think it’s unlikely they will be pulled over for running a red, despite it being against the law.

PREVENTION

Drivers and pedestrians can take measures to increase safety. If you’re driving, make sure you’re  prepared to stop and use good judgement when a light turns yellow. When crossing an intersection, hover your foot over the brake so that you’re ready to stop if needed.

If you’re walking through a cross-walk, always be aware of your surroundings. Wait a few seconds before crossing, stay alert and listen, and make eye contact with drivers who have stopped.
